British Boer Goat
Originating from the South African Boer Goat, bred in South Africa in the early 1900s for meat production, British Boer goats are distinctive with their white bodies and red heads. They are noted for being docile, fast growing and having high fertility rates. Our stud bucks are always full British Boers, but our does are a mixture of full Boer & Boer crosses. This combination gives rise to great milk for the kids and the ability to winter well in the Speyside climate.
Ryeland Rare Breed Sheep
Elchies hogget and mutton comes from our Ryeland sheep, known as 'the sweet meat of Herefordshire'. Our pedigree Ryeland herd and Texel cross ewes produce lambs suited to our Speyside land. We slowly grow our lambs to create Elchies Hogget, slaughtered at 15-24 months, offering rich, mature flavor with low fat and tenderness. Some sheep are raised to 36 - 50 months for high-quality, award winning mutton. Our sheep are sheared annually, and their fleeces are sent to Halifax Spinning Mill for yarns and felting tops. Whole fleeces are available from our shop. Our Ryeland stud rams come from champion bloodlines at Broomwell Ryelands.
Alpacas
Originating in the Andes Mountains of South America these hardy animals winter well in Speyside and their fleece is blended with Ryeland to create a very soft, yet durable, wool for fine knitting yarn.
At Campbell Cairns our alpacas work for a living. The Speyside woodlands are home to Badgers, Foxes and Pine Martens, all who are a natural threat to our ewes and lambs. Due to their natural instinct, Alpacas make the perfect guardian animal. Keeping our sheep safe all year round.
There is never a dull moment with alpacas! Whether you are dealing with the winter cold or clipping fleece in the summer heat alpacas prove an entertaining animal and house well with our more traditional stock.
